Since its launch in 2020, Sony’s PlayStation 5 has established itself as a dominant force in the gaming industry. Yet despite its technical prowess and critical acclaim, a growing number of users continue to battle with a longstanding and disruptive issue: error code CE-108255-1.

This error, which causes games or applications to crash and close unexpectedly, has become a common complaint on Reddit forums, PlayStation support threads, and tech community discussions. Users report being ejected from gameplay—sometimes minutes into a session—with the console displaying the message, “Something went wrong with this game or app.” The result is lost progress, broken immersion, and, in some cases, a complete inability to play specific titles.

What makes CE-108255-1 particularly frustrating is its unpredictable nature. It doesn’t target one game or one type of user. Gamers have reported the crash occurring in both physical and digital copies of titles, across genres, and even on brand-new consoles. Some speculate the issue may relate to corrupted system files or hardware flaws, but Sony has yet to provide a definitive explanation.

Technical support from Sony often culminates in one of two outcomes: sending the console in for repair or replacement, or advising users to wait for a future system update. Neither offers immediate relief, especially in regions where repair centers are limited or turnaround times stretch into weeks.

The emotional toll is growing. “This is a $500 machine that can’t run the games it’s made for,” a frustrated customer wrote in a Twitter thread directed at PlayStation’s support team. “We deserve better answers than ‘try reinstalling the game.’ We’ve done that five times already.”

There’s also concern among game developers, particularly indie studios, who fear their games being wrongly blamed for crashes caused by the console itself. “When players think our game is broken because it crashes, it damages our reputation,” said one independent developer whose title was affected by the error. “But in many cases, it’s the CE-108255-1 issue.”
