Why Your PS5 Controller Won’t Turn On and How to Fix It
The Sony Playstation 5 is one of the most popular gaming consoles of this generation. It has a wide range of features and games to choose from, and the console is backed by a great customer service team. But, as with any technology, there can be issues, and one such issue is that the PS5 controller won’t turn on. This can be a frustrating experience, but luckily, there are some steps you can take to try and fix the problem.
Common Causes of Why the PS5 Controller Won’t Turn On
There are a few common causes of why the PS5 controller won’t turn on. One of the most common issues is that the controller has harshly fallen down on the ground.
Another common cause is that the controller’s battery is dead or running low on power.
A third common cause of why the PS5 controller won’t turn on is that the controller is malfunctioning. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as a hardware issue, a software issue, or an issue with the controller itself.
How to Fix a PS5 Controller That Won’t Turn On
The first step to take when troubleshooting a PS5 controller that won’t turn on is to check if it’s disconnected from the console. If this is the case, simply plug the controller back into the console and try to turn it on again.
If the controller is not disconnected, the next step is to check the battery. If the battery is dead or running low on power, replace it with a new one.
If the battery isn’t the issue, the controller may malfunction. If this is the case, try resetting the controller. Hold the Share and PlayStation buttons for 10 seconds to do this. This should reset the controller and hopefully fix the issue.
If resetting the controller doesn’t work, you may need to contact Sony’s customer service team. They should be able to help you diagnose and repair the controller.

This just happened to us. FIX:___
- turn off ps5 console by holding down the power button and letting go by the second beep.
- Unplug the system for 60 seconds.
- Then turn it back on by using the power button on the ps5 (not the controller).
- Turn on the controller while it is still plugged into the system.
Solution #4
What I’ve found to work is this.
- Start the game using your messed up controller.
- While in the menu asking you to press x or (any button) use a small object “I used a paper clip” to press the tiny reset button on the back of the controller.
- Once the controller turns off “lights are off and you see a notification that it was disconnected from the ps5” plug it in with the USB cable that it came with or any other working g USB to USB C.
This should automatically signal a button was pressed and start your game, the controller will work from there on out. At least so far this has been my solution. Terrible that I have to resort to this with the next Gen console though.
Conclusion
The PS5 controller is a great technology, but it can be frustrating when it won’t turn on. Thankfully, there are some steps you can take to try and fix the issue.
The most common causes of why the PS5 controller won’t turn on are that it’s disconnected from the console, the battery is dead or running low on power, or the controller is malfunctioning.
To fix the issue, check the connection to the console, replace the battery if necessary, reset the controller, and contact Sony’s customer service team if all else fails.
PS5 Controller Won’t Turn On FAQ
Why is my PS5 controller not turning on or charging?
The most common reasons why your PS5 controller may not be turning on or charging are if the battery needs to be replaced, if the controller needs to be reset, if the USB cable connecting it to the console is not working properly, or if the console itself is having an issue. Check the USB cable and make sure it is properly connected to the console and wall outlet. If the controller still will not turn on, try resetting it by pressing the reset button on the back of the controller.
How do I reset an unresponsive PS5 controller?
To reset an unresponsive PS5 controller, first make sure it is charged. If the controller is still unresponsive, press and hold the PlayStation and Share buttons at the same time for about 5 seconds until the light at the top of the controller starts to blink. This will reset the controller and should resolve any issues.
Why won’t my PS5 controller turn on but when I plug it in it blinks?
This could be an indication that the battery is low and needs to be charged. Make sure the controller is connected to the console with a working USB cable and that it is plugged into a wall outlet. If the controller still won't turn on, try resetting it.
If the power button on your PS5 controller is not working, it could be caused by a few different issues. First, try replacing the batteries.
