PS5 backward compatibility refers to the ability of the latest console to play older games like those that were available for the PlayStation 4 (or previous PlayStation game consoles).
Sony has previously implemented backward compatibility features with its earlier consoles. The PlayStation 4 can play older games using processes such as the PlayStation Now service. While the PlayStation 2 (and certain versions) of the PlayStation 3 can directly play physical copies, the PlayStation 2 and certain PlayStation 3 models could also play these older games.

Are PS4 Games Different for PlayStation 5?
Many PS4 games will look almost identical on the PS5 backward compatibility Sony warns that there may be minor issues with some PS4 games, but these will be resolved over time.
Some PS4 games may see improvements, such as faster loading times, higher frame rates, and better resolutions, which will result in better image quality. These games include Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, and Uncharted.
